What Are the Children’s SSI Qualifications?

These are the requirements you must meet to show Social Security that your child with special needs qualifies for funding from Children’s SSI:

• AGE: Your child must be under 18 or age 18 but in high school.
• DISABILITY: Social Security says your child must have a “marked and severe” limitation that stops them from functioning the same as their peers.
• TIME: The limitation that changes how your child functions must last at least a year.
• INCOME: Your family’s income must not exceed certain limits, depending on family size.
• RESOURCES: Your other financial resources must not exceed certain amounts. This can include bank accounts and some property. But the house where you live doesn’t count toward your total.

How do you prove that your child meets these children’s SSI qualifications?

Your application for benefits can include reports from your child’s doctor and information from your child’s school, such as special education Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan documents.

Your claim can also include reports from people who know your child and can see how your child’s conditions affect their daily activities.
